Helping Penn Stainless Fight Cyber Threats

Jun 3, 2022 | By Chris Carrero

Penn Statinless Products (PSP) is a premium supplier and processor of specialty stainless steel, plate, pipe and tubular products since 1979. Their 10,000 square foot business located on Route 309 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and practices on-going system improvements to insure they supply customers with the highest level of stainless steel products and in-house processing possible.

THE PROBLEM

As a global distributor Penn Stainless understood they needed help protecting themselves from looming cyber threats like ransomware. In fact, a cyber attack happens every 11 seconds, making any size business vulnerable to hackers. With an IT department staffed by only two people, a systems administrator and a manager, they knew their current security solutions were not enough to keep up and defend against the growing cyber threats.

TURNING TO CONVERGENT

After witnessing many of their customers become compromised, Penn Stainless needed to contact an expert for help protecting their environment. Their Unified Communications at the time was supported by Convergent for over 10 years. During a routine project inspection, PSP reached out to Ron Moyer, a Convergent Solutions Consultant, to discuss more about cybersecurity and ransomware.

FINDING A SOLUTION

Immediately, the Convergent team went to work to find a way to fortify and augment Penn Stainless' network infrastructure. The solution was implementing a Managed Detection and Response (MDR) Partner. An MDR Partner shares the responsibility of protecting client data and business operations from cyber threats. Convergent utilized eSentire, a leader in managed detection and response, to implement the MDR Partner. Penn Stainless agreed and the solution was implemented within three months of the initial disccusion. They also leveraged multiple solutions from eSentire, including:

  • esNETWORK - The core of the MDR service.
  • esENDPOINT - A managed endpoint security with threat hunting, containment and isolation by endpoint agents.

We were kept up to date on what was going in terms of our phone environment, and I was happy to sign up with the 'ConvergentOne package’ when that was offered. Compared to other vendors we work with here, I can say that I’m very impressed with Convergent staying on top of everything.”
