Protect Your Network From Attacks

Oct 6, 2022 | By Chris Carrero

Since 2004, October has been Cybersecurity Awareness Month, created by the Department of Homeland Security and the National Cybersecurity Alliance to promote safe practices to guard information online. Just last week, the white house issued a statement announcing the awareness.

"During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we highlight the importance of safeguarding our Nation’s critical infrastructure from malicious cyber activity and protecting citizens and businesses from ransomware and other attacks. We also raise awareness about the simple steps Americans can take to secure their sensitive data and stay safe online." -Whitehouse.gov

Convergent wants your business to be safe. Of course, not just for this month, but 24/7, where an attack can happen anytime to anyone. We cannot deny MSPs now have a target on their backs. The ability for a hacker to traverse from an MSP to their clients is a proven and lucrative strategy. Not to mention, it could be devastating for an MSP who has worked for years to build up trust in their organization. An MSP's most considerable risk is not locking down their own network, leaving them susceptible to this kind of attack.

Criminal ransomware groups are also becoming more media savvy, using the threat of leaks to the press to leverage ransomware and extort payments from victim companies. Criminals know that news outlets are covering cybersecurity incidents closely, and that the threat of reputational damage can often result in company executives quickly authorizing ransom payments. If a company still does not pay, the ransomware group will then initiate a marketing drip campaign against their victim, where they slowly release their victim’s personal intellectual property to the media.

We see that cyberthreats constantly evolve, so we must continuously evaluate new dangers and appropriate tools to protect ourselves and our clients. Unfortunately, that work can never be finished, as the next big threat is always emerging. Cybersecurity is the next frontier for MSPs, and waiting to start can cause irreparable damage to your customers, reputation, and revenue. In other words, it is essential to be proactive now in order to protect clients and grow your business.
